The internet is filled with date ideas and extra special gifts you can enjoy with your significant other this Valentine’s Day. The only problem is, a lot of them cost a large chunk of money that most young adults just don’t have to spend for one night. There’s a societal expectation that the more money spent on someone, the more loved they are. While that’s not only untrue, it sets unfair expectations on those who can’t afford the necessities, let alone the luxuries.

So, as a financially-struggling young adult myself, I have created a list of 10 activities you can do with your significant other that won’t make a dent in your wallet. They are fun, and allow for a real connection to be made with your partner. You won’t be focused on how much money you’re spending, so you’re able to really listen to how much they love you.

  • Breakfast Date

Breakfast is the cheapest meal of the day, and it has something that everyone can enjoy. If you’re looking to go out, finding a local diner or cafe is a great idea. Bonus points if you wear pajamas there!

Or, if you’re not looking to go out, buy groceries ahead of time and make your own brunch at home. Add candles, a tablecloth, and some flowers to really sell the moment. Cooking is a great bonding activity, and you can customize the meal however you’d like. I’ll be making heart shaped waffles, a fruit charcuterie board, and some meat for my Valentine’s Day.

  • Ice Skating

Renting a pair of skates costs less than $10 each and ice rinks can be found in most areas. Do some research beforehand to find the one open near you, and plan your excursion. It’s also an excuse for you to both get bundled up in cute winter clothes. Take some pictures, and then head to a nearby coffee shop to warm up.

  • Double Feature

Often, movie tastes don’t align between couples, so this date is a great way to please both viewers. Have each of you pick out your favorite movie and have a double feature. Snuggle up on the couch or in bed with some popcorn and movie snacks, turn off the lights, and enjoy the shows.

  • Thrift Store Surprise

While one person waits in the car, the other heads into a thrift store and tries to find the best gift for their partner. It can be funny, sentimental, or practical. Once they’ve checked out, switch spots. When both people return to the car, exchange the gifts and enjoy the moment. My partner and I are going to do this with records for our record player and see who can find the one that will get played the most.

  • Walk Around to Favorite Spots

If you live in a big city, try and walk around with your partner and take pictures with every mural or cool building that you see. If there aren’t many around because you’re in a more rural area, search to find the best view and capture those. Maybe you both have favorite spots in the town you’re in, so go there! Wherever you go, you’ll make great memories that you’ll be able to look back on and smile.

  • Have an Indoor Picnic

Depending on where you live, February might mean cold weather and snow that makes outdoor picnics not an enjoyable experience. If that’s the case, move it indoors. All you need to do is clear a space and lay a blanket down. Put sandwiches, fruit, desserts, and snacks in little containers in a basket that you and your partner can unpack once you’re ready to start. Champagne, wine, or sparkling cider can make the date seem more fancy. Candles, fairy lights, or music can be added for effect as well.

  • Baking

Like cooking, baking is also a great bonding opportunity. Pick out a Valentine’s Day themed dessert off of the internet or from a recipe book and get the ingredients for it. Do each step together, no matter how simple it may seem. Don’t be afraid to throw some flour either! While the dessert bakes or cools, sit on the ground of the kitchen and swap your favorite stories as a couple. This will make the time go faster until you can eat, and creates a loving atmosphere.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much money you spend, or even what you do. Spend time with your partner, and let them know how much you love and appreciate them. That will mean more than any greeting card or box of chocolates ever would. Stick to what works for the two of you, whether that’s a fancy night on the town or a chill afternoon inside. You’ll both be happier if you do something you’ll both enjoy.
